Choosing a table lamp sounds simple. You find one you like, you order it, and you put it on the shelf. Then it arrives and it is either too small, sitting awkwardly on a surface that dwarfs it, or too tall, drawing attention to itself for the wrong reasons. Getting the size right is one of those things that makes an enormous difference to how a room feels, and yet it rarely gets the attention it deserves.
Here is what to actually consider before you buy.
Start with the surface
The surface your lamp will sit on matters more than the room itself. A bedside table lamp on a low nightstand calls for something compact and considered. A table lamp on a console in a hallway can carry more height. As a general rule, the lamp (base and shade combined) should be roughly 1.5 times the height of the surface it sits on. So if your nightstand is 60 cm tall, you are looking for a lamp somewhere in the range of 45 to 55 cm.
For width, the shade should never overhang the edges of the surface below it. If your side table is 35 cm across, keep the shade diameter under 30 cm.
Think about eye level
This is the detail most people skip. When you are sitting down next to a lamp, whether reading in bed or working at a desk, the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level. This keeps the bulb hidden and the light directed where you need it, without any glare hitting you directly.
If you are placing a table lamp on a console or shelf that you will mostly see from a standing position, you have more flexibility. Here, a taller base with a narrower shade can add elegance without being imposing. The shade changes everything
A wide, drum shade diffuses light broadly and creates a soft ambient glow across the room. A narrower or more tapered shade concentrates light downward, making it better for reading or task lighting. Neither is wrong. It depends on what you need the lamp to do.
If a room already has overhead lighting and you are adding a table lamp for atmosphere, lean toward a wider shade in a warm white or natural linen. If the lamp is doing most of the heavy lifting in a corner or by the bed, something more focused will serve you better. Once you have a sense of the shape you need, it helps to understand the different styles available. Our guide to table lamp styles walks through the main design families and what they work best with.
Proportion over perfection
There is no single correct answer when it comes to table lamp sizing. What matters is proportion: the lamp should feel like it belongs on its surface, in its corner, in its room. A lamp that is slightly too small reads as an afterthought. One that is slightly too large becomes the only thing you notice.
When in doubt, go slightly larger rather than smaller. A well-proportioned lamp with presence anchors a space. A timid one gets lost in it.
A note on light temperature
Once you have the size right, pay attention to the bulb. A lamp of perfect proportions can still feel wrong if the light it casts is too cold or too clinical. For living rooms and bedrooms, aim for a colour temperature between 2700K and 3000K. This is the warm, golden range that makes a room feel settled and inviting rather than bright and functional.
Most of our table lamps are designed with this in mind. The form and the light work together.
